About Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit

Dr. Kamakshi Memorial Hospital has the specialized CTICU, specifically for the care of postoperative cardiac and thoracic surgery patients. We admit patients with a range of cardiac, thoracic and vascular problems, both surgical and medical.

CTICU has the well trained healthcare professionals in support of patients in invasive cardiac monitoring, cardiac support device and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. We also specialize in the ventilatory care of all the patients in CTICU.

Our CTICU offers two types of services


  • Coronary Care is for the patients who have heart disease and occasionally other medical or surgical problems. Various conditions in Coronary Care includes:

    • Myocardial infarction (heart attack)
    • Angina (chest pain)
    • Left ventricular failure (LVF)
    • Arrhythmias (abnormal heart beats)

  • Cardio Thoracic Care is for the patients who have undergone cardiac and thoracic surgery. They need care and monitoring for the following surgical procedures:

    • Aortic or mitral valve replacements/repairs
    • Complex thoracic aortic surgery
    • Thoracic surgery
    • 'Ventricular assist device' implantation
    • Coronary artery bypass grafting

The patients are managed by a team of cardiothoracic anaesthetists. They are supported by fully trained advanced critical care practitioners and with additional trainees. Once they are stable, they are moved to the normal ward to continue their recovery.

  • Temporary atrial, ventricular or A-V sequential pacemakers
  • Intra-aortic balloon pump support
  • Ventricular Assist Device Support
  • Defibrillator and external pacemaker
  • Transport monitors
  • Ventilatory monitoring/weaning
  • Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation
  • Continuous inspired oxygen monitoring
